After Corona Boost: Digitization is slowly progressing again

The digitization in Germany is progressing gradually after the end of the corona epidemics. This is the result of a study by network supplier Cisco, five years after the onset of epidemic. After the house office, video conferences and contactless payments initially experienced a bounce from 2020, now there is hardly any further progress in many areas.

“We see really important progress in many areas,” says Uve Peter, the head of Cisco in Germany. For example, when expanding rapid gigabit internet connections, which will now be available for three -fourths of homes. “But in other areas we also see a certain digital fatigue.”

The number of employees working from home has almost doubled from 13 to 2021 to 13 to 25 percent – but has come back a little since, 23 percent. The use of online offers from authorities rarely increases after a noticeable increase in 2020. And the use of sharp internet is also far behind the possibilities: Gigabit connections are now available for three -fourths of homes, but only every ninth is actually connected. This is not clear, whether for convenience or for cost reasons.

For studies, Cisco has evaluated data from various sources such as statistical offices and associations. In addition, on behalf of Cisco, the Yougov Institute conducted a representative survey of 2000 people from Germany. Results: Only 41 percent of respondents found an improvement in digitization compared to 2019, 39 percent did not see any difference, even eleven percent declines.

Video counseling on the doctor in the survey is clear: He has never used two -thirds of respondents. In the digital offer of the administration, one -third of the respondents said that they should use them more often than five years ago. However, he has never used more than one in five.

According to Peters, the reason for this is the often lack of user -friendship and still a small range of officials that can be digitally done. “For many Germans, it is normal to order ID cards in the office of citizens, without this big questions.”

However, one area has continuously changed: payment transactions. 41 percent of the respondents said that they now pay more contact. Only every ninth never tried this. According to the study, 84 percent of citizens now use online banking compared to 52 percent five years ago.

“Where it really brings benefits, people are also there,” says Peter. And cash is only the most popular means of payment with very low leads: Payment of payment transactions has fallen from 84 to 51 percent since 2019. According to Peter, this is probably due to greater acceptance of card payment in retail. Meanwhile, you can pay almost anywhere. “It was very different five years ago.”
