The annual Hannah Arendt Days in Hanover commemorates the political theorist Hannah Arendt, who was born in Hanover-Linden in 1906, and commemorates her extensive work. Eva-Maria Weiss, editor of Heise Online and moderator of the panel discussion, explains, “Hannah Arendt was known for not shying away from unpleasant discussions. Her central question about the meaning of political freedom was central to current and future social discussions. Provides many suggestions.” 25 January October.
From the Sprengel Museum to Heize Headquarters
The series of events begins on October 22 with a conversation on the topic “Freedom in Turbulent Times” between Mayor Blythe Ohne and the co-founder of the human rights organization Memorial at the Sprengel Museum in Hanover. The next day Professor Dr. Till van Treeck from the Institute of Social Economics at the University of Duisburg-Essen spoke on “Leisure and politics. Ways out of the working society”.

On October 25, media company Heise will host a panel discussion on artificial intelligence. “Artificial intelligence has long become a central part of everyday life,” emphasizes Eva-Maria Weiss. “On the one hand, the use of AI promises new opportunities for business, work, education and learning. On the other hand, there are concerns about surveillance, discrimination, disinformation and restrictions on freedom.”
Bernd Lange, Member of the European Parliament for the SPD, Professor Dr. Dagmar Monnett Diaz from the Berlin School of Economics and Law and Professor Dr. Judith Möller from the University of Hamburg. Lang stepped in for Dr. Sergey Lagodinsky. Lange is known for her work in the European Parliament, particularly for negotiating the “European Declaration on Digital Rights and Principles for the Digital Decade”, in which she introduced several elements on artificial intelligence. He is Chairman of the Trade Committee and Conference of Committee Chairs of the European Parliament, as well as Envoy for EU-US trade relations and Chairman of the Fair Trade Working Group.
The focus of the discussion is on the regulation and ethical challenges of AI, particularly in the context of the new EU AI Regulation, which came into force on August 1, 2024.
The central questions of the event will be: How can the potential and risks of AI be communicated intelligently? What freedoms does it enable and where should it be limited to protect communication, education and belief? What does AI actually contribute to society?
The final event in the planetarium of Herrenhausen Castle on 26 October is dedicated to the question “Threat, sanctions, development – how can freedom succeed?” High-profile guests such as Katrin Goring-Eckardt, Professor Dr. Roland Pfister and Professor Dr. Frauke Rostalsky discusses how freedom can be preserved against the background of an increasingly harsh social climate.
All events of Hannah Arendt Days 2023 are open to the public. The entire program is online Visible. The series of events is supported by the Volkswagen Foundation and Heise Online.
