Similar to the AirPods Max: Condensation may also collect in the Sonos Ace

Shortly after the release of Apple’s AirPods Max in December 2020, there were reports of a very specific problem: Condensation could form under the removable ear pads (ear cups) under certain circumstances, sometimes leading to hardware damage. Becomes the reason. This behavior still occurs today with USB-C models released in September 2024, so Apple was unable to resolve it. Interestingly, it’s not just the AirPods Max that are affected: Sonos’ first ANC over-ear headphones, the Ace, Mac and i, show similar behavior that was discovered in a short test. Unlike the AirPods Max, the area that holds the moisture on the Ace is not made of aluminum, but plastic. It is still unclear whether this affects the hardware itself.

Condensation forms under the ear cups, especially in areas of high humidity. But not only here: If you wear the Ace (or AirPods Max) for particularly long periods at a time, for example for an hour and a half, this can also be noticed in Germany. If the body is slightly warm, for example if you have taken a hot bath before sitting, the problem occurs even faster. It was initially unclear whether this was reinforced by the fact that the Ace’s ear cups were covered with finer mesh than those of the AirPods Max.

The structure of the Sonos Ace and the AirPods Max are surprisingly similar: removable on the outside (and also at 49 euros) replaceable later) ear pads. Instead of fabric like Apple, these are made of “vegan leather.” The ear cups have a thin mesh that allows sound to pass through and is probably also intended to prevent skin particles and other objects from entering. Like the AirPods Max, the ear pads are magnetically secured and can be replaced quickly.

Condensation now forms under the ear cushions, just like the AirPods Max, which is why you should check regularly if this happens. This area is made of plastic (AirPods Max: aluminum) and has several holes for sound. The amount of fluid can range from a few drops to a droplet. It can be absorbed by clothes. The problem, however, is what happens when fluid penetrates deep into the Ace’s drivers. There were initially no technical problems in our tests, for example with sound when condensation could be detected. But this is unlikely to be good for the devices – although it is unclear whether there may be any protective membrane beneath the hole.

Sonos did not initially respond to inquiries about the condensation. The company has yet to answer another question about the reasons behind mandatory space sharing in the official app for Mac and i Ace. The Sonos Ace is offered by the manufacturer for 500 euros and therefore has a similar price to the AirPods Max. In stores (from €380) However, the prices are affordable.
