LibreLive C1: wireless smart guitar

A stringless guitar is being introduced at CES in Las Vegas for those who can’t or don’t want to learn a real instrument. So it’s hard to see the LibreLive C1 as a real guitar. The body is solid only in the lower part. There is a curved plastic ring at the top. Overall, the device resembles a game controller.

On the neck you do not press any strings, but instead press three snaps per fret. The big middle one plays pure major or minor raga. Upper and lower can be assigned, for example with a maj7 variant. Hitting or picking replaces two levers that can be moved up or down on the playing surface.

The device weighs just under 1.8 kilograms and is foldable – after all, the body is not subject to the tensile force of six steel strands. Thus the LibreLive C1 fits in a backpack.

There is a rotary control on the top of the device that sets one of seven tones. For all twelve keys you will have to switch to the mobile app. For example, in C setting, the corresponding chords C, Dm, Am, F, G, Em, Hm (English Bm) can be played. The chord levels on frets C1 correspond to I to VII.

The LibreLive app is available for Android and iOS and offers approximately 100 rhythm guitar strum patterns. You can also pluck individual fretted strings with your fingers. The speed can also be set by tapping the neck.

A type of karaoke mode displays chord symbols and lyrics. It took a while to get used to playing along in the fair, but it was eventually achieved by the end of the first song. You can enter your own songs to expand your repertoire.

In the app you can also choose between the sound modes guitar, bass and piano. Plus, if you feel you need something more than “Brother Jacob”, you can enter up to 72 custom chords. A simple drum machine is also integrated.

The keys of the LibreLive C1 are set on the top of the guitar. Pressing the fingerboard marks the strings, which you can make sounds using two percussion levers.

A speaker with a diameter of 77 mm and a tweeter of 20 mm produce sound. The integrated 2000 mAh battery is said to last up to six hours, which doubles when an external speaker is connected. 3.5 mm jack output is available for this. The battery is charged via USB-C.

The stringless guitar has a discounted price of $499 (full price $799) and is available in four colors: white, black, pink, and green. The target group are party musicians who don’t have the time or leisure to learn a real instrument.
