AI chatbot Grok first available as a standalone iOS app in some countries

AI assistant Grok is first available as a standalone app for iOS in some countries. In Australia, among other places, users can download the free app from the company xAI, which is owned by Elon Musk. In Germany it is not available in the App Store until January 2, 2025. According to media reports, there are plans to gradually introduce the chatbot as a standalone app in other countries. It was first marketed as part of the short messaging service X and was only accessible through X.

Users can log into the app with their X credentials, with separate access via Apple or Google login, and via email. In the app itself, the user encounters the Large Language Model (LLM) Grok2, which can be used to generate both text and images. Core functions include text summarization, rewording, programming support and question answering, Grok has real-time access to data on X and the Internet in addition to its training data.

When creating images, the developer company largely abandons the restrictions on the selection of image motifs that are common with other AI developers. For example, publicly known people are not exempt and copyrighted materials may also be used. The app is still in beta state, which is clearly visible in the navigation bar, among other things.

In early December, xAI had already opened its AI chatbot to users of Platform X. Previously, Grok was only available to premium subscribers on the platform. xAI is obviously looking to expand its reach. Free users can send up to ten messages to the AI every two hours. For free users the number of images generated is limited to four per day, and three image analyzes are possible per day. The inauguration was preceded by trials in countries such as New Zealand.

Grok was officially announced in November 2023 and is intended as an alternative to AI chatbots like ChatGPT from OpenAI or Gemini from Google.
