At first glance, the Xiaomi Battery Air Pump 1S is reminiscent of a blown-up iPod Classic. The similarity to Apple’s cult player is hard to ignore. With its flat, cubic housing in matte black and large display on the front, the pump not only looks beautiful, but also feels high quality and sturdy with a metal housing. With its attractive design, the pump can easily serve as a decorative item.

Xiaomi is useful: with dimensions of 12.5 × 7 × 4.5 cm (without hose) and a weight of 669 grams, it is one of the most compact and lightweight cordless air pumps on the market. Unnecessary bells and whistles were avoided. There are ventilation slots for air intake on the left and right sides of the housing. The Xiaomi Pump is easy to operate: there are five sensor buttons in a classic clickwheel layout below the display. Target pressure can be set in 0.5 increments using plus/minus and confirmed with the middle button. The left and right arrow keys are used to change profiles.

When it comes to pumping, the Xiaomi shows no weaknesses: after connecting it to the valve and selecting the target pressure, it starts up with a courageous hum. You will immediately notice that there is a powerful motor at work in a compact housing. We used a completely empty 27.5-inch mountain bike tire as a test – and were impressed: the Xiaomi inflated the tire to the set 2.5 bar in just 2 minutes. With a measurement of 67 dB at a distance of 80 cm, it is just as loud as other competitors. The disturbing thing is that there is a very high pitch, somewhat reminiscent of old moped engines.

Xiaomi specifies the maximum pump performance at 10.3 times. A good solution is the integrated LED lamp, which provides some illumination in the dark when needed – for example if you have to patch a flat tire at night. But you shouldn’t expect too much brightness, as the small LED on the chest is very weak. A few more lumens would have been desirable here.
