Error while backing up iPhone photos: iOS 18 bug causes frustration

A persistent bug is plaguing iPhone photographers: Since the release of iOS 18 in September, reports of problems editing recordings have been increasing. After editing, Apple’s Photos app may not be able to save the changes. Affected users simply receive the unhelpful warning “An error occurred while saving this photo. Try again later.” (There was an error saving this photo. Please try again later.)

The process can then simply be cancelled, but this means that all the processing steps you have just done will be lost. If you try again later, the error usually occurs again, users note.

Most of the problem reports so far have come from iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Pro owners, but the bug appears to occur on older iPhone model series as well. Refusing to save may not be seen with every photo and often only happens sporadically – but that makes it all the more frustrating.

If the error message appears, photo edits cannot be saved – and are therefore lost.

The first updates to iOS 18 provided by Apple – including iOS 18.1 – did not eliminate the error, which was also repeatedly noticeable on the iPhone 16 Pro of the “Mac & i” editorial team. It is unclear how many users will ultimately be affected. There have been reports of such error messages in older iOS versions, but usually only to a limited extent.

It seems that the problem is now known to Apple also. The developers say that the bug is still in the second beta of iOS 18.2. Users of the public operating system beta also report this. In contrast, editing and saving photos seems to work smoothly again in the latest third developer beta.

Until Apple documents the bug and releases a fix, a workaround will help: If you make a duplicate of a recording in the Photos app without the Live Photos component, it can usually be edited normally. Even recordings in which the Live Photo function was turned off directly did not trigger the bug. The manufacturer is expected to release iOS version 18.2 to the general public in the first half of December.
