“We’re in the business of big hits”: Take-Two sells private division

Take-Two is selling its indie label Private Division for an undisclosed sum. The private division was responsible for publishing smaller titles within Take-Two such as “Kerbal Space Program 2” and the upcoming “Lord of the Rings” game “Tales of the Shire”.

The sale amount for the private division is currently unknown. Take-Two is also keeping the identity of the buyer a secret. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick justified the move, saying the private division no longer fit the business concept. Industry magazine gamesindustry.biz,

“The scope of these projects was, frankly, quite small, and we’re in the big hits business,” Zelnick said. Take-Two clearly still sees big hit potential with “No Rest for the Wicked” from Austrian Moon Studio, which previously developed the “Ori” game. The action RPG, which is currently in Early Access, is apparently switching straight from Private Division to Take-Two before going on sale. So this is not part of the deal and will continue to be supported by Take-Two.

All other published and currently in-development games belong to the new owner, whose name has not been revealed yet.

It became clear early in the year that Take-Two was no longer happy with the private division. The US publisher behind the “GTA” games has shut down development studios Intercept Games and Roll7, which both operated under the Private Division label.

Intercept Games was responsible for the development of “Kerbal Space Program 2” and it has a particularly strange story: Take-Two acquired the “Kerbal” license from Mexican developer Studio Squad, which developed Part 1. Independent studio Star Theory was supposed to create a successor with a license and financial backing from Take-Two – until Take-Two became impatient. The American publisher took the project back from the independent studio, folded its staff and established Studio Intercept, which would from then on further develop “Kerbal Space Program 2” as an integral part of Take-Two.
