Polish radio station uses AI to create text and moderation

They are called EMI, Kuba or Alex, and they broadcast every day on Off Radio Kraków – but they don’t actually exist. Behind the three names are the digital personalities of the radio presenters. They sound like real speakers, the tone is like radio, from factual to emotional, to perfect imitation. Starting this week, the station, a digital version of the larger Radio Kraków, has been using artificial intelligence for moderation and content.

The station has started this experiment Announced on your homepageThat includes images of digital personalities, which also come from AI. And certainly they look like the channel probably imagines its target group: perfectly beautiful twenty-somethings, fresh from the gym, successful people in the typically effortless guise of an image generator. The Cuban quoted at the beginning is such a personality, someone – or something – even gave him a nickname, according to his profile His name is Jakub “Kuba” Zielinski. He plays everything from classic rock like Led Zeppelin to electronic like Aphex Twin.

According to the broadcaster, to enable Digital Cuba to speak a text on the radio, it is created and checked by human journalists using AI tools. Then a speech generator controls it. It is not clear from the description of Off Radio Kraków whether Kuba himself chooses the music, cuts the changes, or does everything else that a radio presenter and his producer and editorial team (if any) do.

The station creates not only the presentation of content, but also the stories, partly using AI. An example is an interview with the late Nobel laureate Wislawa Szymborska about the Nobel Prizes in 2024. with the author’s voice Of can be found on the Radio Krakow website. It is said that it was finally made with the consent of his surviving relatives. In the introduction to this and other AI contributions, including the one driven by Kuba et al., the broadcaster points out the technology behind it.

Like the British, AI-powered radio experiment is expected to last for three months register reportIt is said that before the experiment began, about a dozen Off Radio Kraków employees, including presenters, were fired. The broadcaster denies this: these were only temporary contracts for those who broadcast only once a week. This did not work and so the contracts were not extended.

Off-Editor-in-Chief Marcin Pulit Makes an Effort in a StatementTo make AI content really seem like a worthwhile experiment: “We want to assess what impact the development of artificial intelligence could have on culture, media, journalism and society.” And further: “Is artificial intelligence an opportunity or a threat to media, radio and journalism? We will seek to answer this question.”
