French media report the “first wave” of arrests of people behind hate posters in France. Authorities there arrested six men and one woman from Tuesday to Thursday. Thomas Jolly will be arraigned on March 5, 2025 for allegedly making hate posts online. Jolly is an actor and was the artistic director of the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2024 Olympics.

There has been a wave of hatred against him online. Illegal postings are characterized by anti-Semitism and homophobia and sometimes include death threats. The daily newspaper Nice Matin, citing an expert, reported that the seven arrests were just the beginning of a longer wave. Following a complaint dated 31 July, the National Center to Combat Online Hate (PNLH) of the Paris Public Prosecutor’s Office initially conducted the investigation, after which OCLCH was called in. OCLCH stands for L’Office Central de Luit contre les Crimes contre l’Humanité et les Crimes de Hain, i.e. the Central Office for Combating Crimes against Humanity and Hate Crimes. The age of the arrested men is between 22 and 79 years, the age of the woman is 57 years. He will be brought before the court’s 17th Chamber, which specializes in freedom of expression and press law.
The 2024 Summer Olympics began on 26 July in Paris and ended on 11 August. Thousands of artists participated in the one-hour long inauguration ceremony. The 17th Paralympic Summer Games ran from 8 August to 8 September, with Jolly also directing the opening and closing ceremonies.
