Convertible offerings are now rare on the German market. This is partly because, as my colleague Clemens mused after a recent trip in the Mazda MX-5, the majority now (or no longer?) knows how beautiful it really is. The development is therefore very welcome, and the BMW Mini brand is making an attractive contribution with the next version.
still small
Even with this model change, those responsible decided not to try to completely redesign the car. Many things remain the same visually and conceptually as they were before. It is made with dimensions of less than four meters in length (3.88 m) and a classic fabric top. It can be opened in 18 seconds at vehicle speeds of up to 30 km/h, with the driver having two options: they can fold it all the way back or open only over the head. This gap is then 40 cm long. The amount of space in the rear seats and trunk remains modest. It has a capacity of 160 to 215 litres, depending on whether the top is open or closed.

Most progress has been made in the field of consumer electronics. On this point, the Mini is on par with BMW’s other current models. In the middle is a large, round OLED screen, with powerful hardware behind it. In a three-door car, the system appealed with its intelligent voice control, quick responses and razor-sharp display. An additional component becomes interesting in convertibles: how easy it is to read the display when sunlight hits the display directly.
Three petrol engines on offer
When sales begin in February 2025, Mini will offer convertibles with three four-cylinder engines. Even the base model has 120 kW, accelerating the small car to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and enabling up to 220 km/h. For many people, something less would certainly be more than enough – especially in a convertible that’s going to be slow to accelerate. The next level in the hierarchy offers 150 kW and, at 300, offers 50 Nm more than the base. This means a standard sprint of 6.9 seconds and speeds of up to 237 km/h are possible. For both variants, Mini states a consumption of 6.5 to 6.6 liters in WLTP.

Top model with 300 hp?
There is still no official information about the “performance-oriented” JCW model. However, one look at the mini-offers gives you an idea of where things are headed. The current Mini Countryman JCW has a two-litre gasoline engine producing 221 kW. This drive can also be available in convertible. It will also be exciting to see if BMW gives a very positive response to the electric Mini Convertible. It was initially presented as a single piece, followed by a mini-series of 999 pieces in 2023, which quickly sold out despite the price of around 60,000 euros. Offering the new convertible with at least an electric drive should be an incentive. The Fiat ( )500 with roll top in the editorial office impressively demonstrated how attractive this combination is.
When convertible sales begin in February 2025, list prices will be significantly lower. The basic model is available from 31,200 euros, but as with the Mini, even with the low demand for equipment, this is likely to rise significantly.
