Black and white world: photos of week 39

The photographers at C’T Photo Gallery impressed us with their black and white photos last week. From animals to landscapes to architectural photography, they cover a wide variety of photographic styles. Pictures impress with their great composition, interesting structure or even motif.

Gallery photographer analoochjehtooch took this high-key shot with very strong contrast on a safari through Namibia and Botswana and explains: “The photo was taken when a scissorbill (bottom center of the photo) and two white-whisked terns The water was blowing under the boat. The sun was not ideal for this image, so I could still see the water surface of the Chobe River as a speck below the middle bird.

A classic motif that gallery photographers Calvin&Hobbes were able to capture at the Steinhuder Meer near Hanover. He reports on analog black and white recording: “In search of a motif and in a desire to find some distance from what was happening on the shore, I separated myself from the group and came to this bridge, where I Found myself for the first time.” I was interested in the structure of the wooden railing. When I saw the individual sail, I took a picture of it. This is absolutely in line with my desire to distance myself, even if circumstances favor it.”

Particularly in architectural photography, building structures may appear different in black and white because color is no longer visual information and is not initially jarring. Especially in this case, it helps the viewer to better see the outline of the facade of this house with balconies and better understand its uniform design.

We’re always amazed by our gallery photographer Carsten Geiselmann’s staircase photos, and this one looks especially good in black and white. Geiselman says of the photograph: “Windows usually have a disturbing effect in staircase photographs, so I try to avoid them. However, the inclusion of the glass block front led to an interesting contradiction of shapes. This For emphasis, I chose to work in monochrome. A vignette strengthens the contrast in brightness and helps direct the eye to the center of the picture, the staircase.”

The sky, contrails, palm trees and tent roofs together create a more minimalist image. The black palm trees and white tent roof create an interesting pair of contrasts due to the monochrome image design and the clouds and contrails look like white chalk drawings in the sky.

This VW Beetle, parked in front of the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, was captured in black and white by gallery photographer don’t-panic-42. The photographer said of his photo: “With the Beetle, many of us ‘old’ people became mobile. Whether it was our first car or our parents’ car, we traveled with the Beetle to visit friends and family. ‘Locked up’ and behind bars, as was my first thought in this work of art: The Beetle is in prison rather than buzzing freely on a country road.

On the occasion of World Photo Day on August 19, gallery photographer Clicker3D shows this image of a detached Nikon Coolpix 3100. This (technical) still life inside the camera, which came on the market in 2003, looks particularly elegant, timeless in black and white and has a certain memento mori character.
