What would you see if you flew into the past or even into a black hole? This question is not so easy to answer or even imagine. In the end, relativity effects due to the enormous gravity of black holes play an important role (pun intended). A NASA team led by Jeremy Schnittman and Brian Powell set out to find an answer at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and loaded the supercomputer “Discover” with their data.

The result is the series Black hole visualization With an explanatory (English) article and several 360 degree animations. You can either access it with or without commentary on YouTube or download it from NASA for personal use. The flights depart 640 million kilometers from a black hole similar to the one at the center of a galaxy with a mass of 4.3 million solar masses. The trip either goes right past it or right inside it in a swinging maneuver. You get to see fascinating effects as time is slowed down.
