For many people, “always on” is not only part of everyday life, but also travels with them on holidays. According to a survey by industry association Bitkom, this phenomenon is not just a side effect, but also a determining factor in holidays for many people. According to it, 62 percent of people have already visited a destination during the holidays in order to share photos of it on social media. Among young people aged 16 to 29, this was 74 percent. In general, holiday photos are also prominent for many of those surveyed: 65 percent said they share more photos or videos of their holidays than of their everyday life.

In order to get good photos for their own social media profile, 26 percent even cross barriers or ignore restrictions. 22 percent of those surveyed said they had already put themselves in danger in order to get special photos. “Holiday photos on social media now regularly cause hype about certain holiday destinations or sightseeing spots,” Louise Ritter from Bitkom says.He has become a major figure for tourism.

Editing and forgery are part of it
To keep up with the picture feed, 28 percent also use tools that help with visuals: 28 percent regularly use filters or other processing for their pictures, and 35 percent of 16 to 29 year olds said yes. 17 percent go further and already have fake images – for example by placing themselves in front of a different background. Here, too, those under 30 said this more often: 24 percent. Ritter cites the pressure to keep up as the reason. “It helps to know that posts can only show a small excerpt and that not all recordings reflect the whole reality.”
Most people like to see other people’s vacation photos in their feed: 73 percent are happy with it. On the other hand, 23 percent said they are dissatisfied with their lives when they see other people’s vacation experiences on social networks.
Social media trends cause problems for venues
In recent years, more and more places have struggled with their good reputation: because lakes, nature reserves, mountain peaks or cities offer an exceptional background, they developed into real impressionist hotspots. By sharing photos, more and more people become aware of the places. Some channels themselves recommend starting your hiking tour especially early in the morning, because at peak times there are a lot of people at the places. Some cities and municipalities are already restricting access to their photo hotspots.
On behalf of the digital association Bitkom, 1,005 people aged 16 and over in Germany were surveyed, including 695 who use social media and usually go on holiday trips.
