Dame As per Deadline’s report Viewership for “The Acolyte” was mixed despite good reviews. The series got off to a really strong start: the two opening episodes published on June 4 were viewed 4.8 million times in just one day – the most successful series premiere of the year on Disney+.
But apparently many viewers were dissatisfied with what they saw. Deadline reports that viewership declined as the series progressed. Overall, Disney is said to have drawn negative conclusions due to the series’ high production costs.
Prequel to prequel series
“The Acolyte” is set several decades before the events of the prequel trilogy episodes 1 to 3 (“The Phantom Menace”, “Attack of the Clones” and “Revenge of the Sith”) and establishes the “High Republic”, a new era in the “Star Wars canon”. At this time, the Galactic Republic, dominated by the Jedi Order, is at its peak. However, there is also a dark threat here – including the main villain, well known to “Star Wars” enthusiasts, who has already been mentioned in the prequel trilogy. “The Acolyte” also deals with a power struggle between two twin sisters and a mysterious series of Jedi murders. On Metacritic, audiences have given the series a 3.9 out of a possible 10.
The end of Season 1 hinted at the possibility of further episodes. Showrunner Leslye Headland also campaigned for further seasons but to no avail. Meanwhile, other “Star Wars” series continue, including “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka.” Disney has yet to comment publicly on the future of The Acolyte.
