Customers should benefit from a larger selection as they can choose between the tariffs of both providers. According to the companies, O2 customers are connected just as fast and receive the same operational and troubleshooting services as Telecom customers.
Dr. Kerstin Baumgart, Managing Director Wholesale at Telekom Deutschland, says: “Many people and companies in Germany benefit from this cooperation.” Telekom wants to further increase the use of its broadband network and invest the proceeds in network expansion.
Andreas Löckenmann, board member for private customers at O2 Telefónica, explains: “With the new contract, our O2 customers get even more attractive access to Germany’s largest fibre optic network.” O2 customers can switch to fibre optics at no additional cost as soon as it becomes available.
25 million fiber optic connections by 2030
Telecom says currently 8.8 million households can book fibre optic tariffs up to 1 gigabit per second.
According to the company, Telecom’s fiber optic network is more than 770,000 kilometers long. Telecom wants to provide fiber optics to 2.5 million more homes this year. The company plans to provide fiber optic connections to at least 25 million homes by 2030.
The federal government’s Gigabit strategy stipulates that all homes in Germany will be able to use fiber optics by 2030. Nationwide expansion is seen as crucial for the country’s digitalization.
The cooperation between Telekom and O2 Telefonica in the fixed network sector has existed since 2020. With the new contract, this cooperation is now being expanded. Both companies see this as a benefit for customers and fiber optic expansion in Germany.
