Eight years after release: “No Man’s Sky” gets a major graphics update

New worlds, huge clouds, deep shadows and an entirely new water system: Hello Games is significantly improving the look of “No Man’s Sky” in a new update called “Worlds Part 1.” A trailer shows the sometimes dramatic improvement compared to previous graphics.

In the eight years since its disappointing release, “No Man’s Sky” has regularly received major updates that have brought new gameplay systems and content to the space game. Despite its poor market launch, “No Man’s Sky” was rewarded for these countless improvements with a large and committed community that remains very active eight years after release.

While many gameplay systems have been significantly modified, the technology still largely corresponds to the version that hit the market in 2016. This changes with “Worlds Part 1”: The computer-controlled planet generation has been equipped with many new assets to enable more varied planets to be displayed with new biomes – including toxic planets and ice planets. New volumetric effects make the game more atmospheric than before in the trailer.

The upcoming update also features new wind simulation, which allows grass and trees to blow in the wind. What is particularly striking is the redesigned water, which looks much more fluid and can even simulate waves. All of this comes together in new weather effects such as storms. Hello Games boss Sean Murray explains that some of these technical improvements were originally developed for the upcoming title “Light No Fire”.

The underlying systems have also been optimized to ensure more efficient performance, Hello Games promises in patch notes. This should allow more objects to be rendered on the screen. Some scenes of vegetation and planets should also be visible from greater distances. Players with existing Nvidia graphics cards can also switch to DLSS 3, which should include frame generation in addition to resolution upscaling.
