watchOS 11: More exercise, more health

Movement and health are also the focus of watchOS 11: the update brings with it some detailed improvements that Apple announced at the WWDC 2024 developer conference. There are new training assessments and an app for vital signs.

watchOS 11 introduces a new feature called Training Load, which tracks workout intensity. The watch measures the level of exertion and the training duration. After each workout, a stress rating is available where the difficulty is rated between 1 and 10. From this data, watchOS creates trends and compares workout efforts from the past week to workouts from the previous 28 days. This allows users to see if they have improved or gotten worse. The feature aims to help prevent injuries caused by overexertion.

If you occasionally have a cheat day and don’t train, you no longer have to worry about your success. The activity ring can now be paused for a day, a week or a month and goals can be adjusted depending on the day of the week.

A new app called Vitals evaluates various data such as sleep, altitude changes, alcohol consumption or heart rate and displays health trends. It aims to provide a better understanding of the body and conclude if the wearer will get sick soon.

For pregnant mothers, the Health app provides a “pregnancy” entry in the cycle log with more in-depth details. Users can now enter which trimester they are in and whether any events such as bleeding have occurred. Health-related data such as heart rate or walking consistency measured by the iPhone is also displayed here. Since women are at higher risk of developing illnesses such as depression during pregnancy, they can receive messages to assess their mental health.

The Smart Stack introduced with watchOS 10 receives new functions. This is how it shows live activity. Widgets appear here automatically. The watch performs live translation when the country changes or shows rain when the weather changes.

A “check-in” function is coming to the Apple Watch. This means the watch can automatically notify contacts that the wearer has arrived home safely. Apple introduced this feature on the iPhone with iOS 17 in 2023.

The so-called “effort rating” shows on the watch how hard you worked.

There is a new interface (API) for the “double tap” gesture, which so far only works on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2. The gesture should be used in more apps in the future as it makes it easier to scroll and interact with one hand on any app.

watchOS now improves watch faces that are designed with your own photos through machine learning. With these “photo faces” images are automatically selected and the appropriate section is chosen. However, third-party dials are still not available.

watchOS 11 requires at least an S6 chip to run On all Series 6 Apple Watches released in 2020. The first-generation Apple Watch SE, released the same year, has not received an upgrade. The Series 5, which has the same chip as the first SE, and the Series 4 will also remain on watchOS 10. The Xs also requires an iPhone with iOS 18. The update for the Apple Watch will be released in the autumn, and developers can download the beta version starting Monday evening.
