VisionOS: version 1.2 is here, version 2.0 in autumn

Vision Pro has been on the market since February (initially in the United States), but so far there has been slow progress in terms of software. With VisionOS 1.1, MDM functions and nice digital personas were integrated, and one or two bugs and one or two security gaps were fixed. VisionOS 1.2 has been available for download since Monday evening, and Apple also announced the first information about VisionOS 2 in its WWDC keynote.

VisionOS 1.2 brings improvements in a total of seven areas, so it is quite comprehensive. The messaging app on the Vision Pro can now finally check the iMessage contact key. This means that even Vision Pro owners can activate the function and after deactivation (which was previously mandatory when using the Vision Pro) there will be no error messages for other users. Mobile device management on the headset now knows user enrollment via the so-called account-driven device and the managed Apple ID and allows further configuration of the device (WLAN, VPN, email, SSO and more). Apps can be distributed “in volume” in their iOS and iPadOS versions and MDM can handle universal purchases as well as in-house VisionOS apps.

The personality function can now be created without hands, hair and makeup should look better and the mouth and neck should appear more realistic. The display of eyes on external screens (iSight) is said to have become more beautiful too. The virtual keyboard provides more accurate cursor positioning, should no longer cover the input field and should always properly synchronize the text preview. A bug where the Edit menu appeared unexpectedly has been fixed. In terms of accessibility, subtitles can now be anchored to the playback button when watching Apple Immersive Video content. Wi-Fi networks using the Captive Network function are now supported by Vision Pro. The Mac Virtual Display for Mac remote control now connects faster and more reliably. A bug where Universal Control failed to find tethered Bluetooth devices has been fixed, as well as the problem with not finding tethered Bluetooth devices.

VisionOS 2, which is available as a beta and will be released in the autumn, comes with management innovations that significantly improve operation. You can open the home screen and Control Center with two new hand or finger gestures, and the time and battery level can also be displayed immediately if desired. Previously, you had to open the home screen and Control Center by pressing a button and looking up – or use Siri or a voice prompt.

The update is now aimed at making the virtual Mac display appear as a high-resolution “ultrawide” screen to provide more space. It should always be nice and sharp due to the preferred rendering. Until now, Apple has limited this feature to 4K screens, but now the resolution will be significantly higher. VisionOS 2 can now display 2D photos as AI-generated spatial photos, so they no longer need to take shots from the Vision Pro or the iPhone 15 Pro or 15 Pro Max. According to Apple, Travel Mode works not only on airplanes but also on rails. VisionOS 2 now supports not only Magic Trackpad devices, but also finally mice. Apple has also upgraded the API for developers, including a tabletop mode for industrial simulations and virtual board games. The location of 3D objects in the room was also refined.
