macOS 15: Apple reduces memory requirements for the App Store

Anyone who has a lot of apps but also an (almost) full SSD knows the problem: Apple’s App Store can refuse to install updates or download new programs. The reason: Until now, the App Store always required at least double the storage space to be able to perform the installation. This could be annoying, especially with large apps and games. With the second beta of macOS 15 aka Sequoia, this is now changing Apple’s leaflet for the latest developer beta It emerges.

“Starting with macOS 15, the App Store no longer requires double the storage space for the first download and installation of an app,” the company writes. The required storage space now corresponds to “the app’s final installation size plus a smaller buffer.” Developers can communicate this to their customers, the company said.

The new feature is one of a whole range of convenient file management functions that will be introduced with macOS 15, iOS 18 and iPadOS 18. In the future, it will be possible to determine files and folders that will no longer be deleted during automatic iCloud management. To do this, you just need to select the desired files in the Finder and confirm it using the context menu. On iPhone and iPad, it is also possible to directly format SSDs and other external USB-C storage media for the first time.

In the second developer beta of macOS 15, Apple is also adding additional functions. There are new background sounds in the accessibility area (which previously did not always work as desired), the ability to better configure AirPods (including new nod and shake head functions to answer / reject calls) and improvements to iCloud sync in general.

Anyone who is not a participant in Apple’s developer program will be able to test macOS 15 starting next month. The first public beta is expected to arrive in a few weeks. It should be based on developer beta 3 or 4, so it will be a little more stable.
