CarPlay 2.0: widgets leaked as a sign of life

The first car models with next-generation CarPlay should actually be presented in 2024. As is well known, this did not lead to anything, but apparently the new CarPlay has not been ruled out either. This is now indicated by new leaked screen shots that were found in the EU database and were used by the individual, which he published onAttributed to the next generation of CarPlay.

You can check out images that show how users will potentially be able to choose between different widgets in CarPlay 2.0 in the future. In appearance they look similar to the widgets known from the iPhone. In the extension you can see a clock widget where users can display the time in a specific city, a weather widget with a forecast for a specific location, and a calendar widget highlighting the next appointment. A combination widget for navigation and media player is also featured, as well as a widget that shows what’s currently playing.

At the end of November, various representations of the new CarPlay elements had already been discovered in the design protection database of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). These included the integration of car manufacturers’ logos and hints at how Apple plans vehicle control elements. The Apple website for the next generation of CarPlay still says the first vehicle models should arrive in 2024. In late 2023, Porsche and Aston Martin were named as the first manufacturers to integrate CarPlay 2.0. The concept goes far beyond the infotainment system, which is currently occupied by CarPlay 1.0, and also aims to connect elements to the iPhone to control vehicle systems and displays.

It’s unclear whether Apple only plans to integrate widgets into CarPlay 2.0 or whether the potential leak could also provide information about an upcoming update for first CarPlay generation users. The expansion of widgets to CarPlay would at least be consistent after Apple first introduced a kind of broader concept across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. The images shown now do not require any connection to the car beyond the current CarPlay.
