Better mobile phone reception also in tunnels: Vodafone puts new 5G antenna in operation for car and train tunnels.
The mobile operator Vodafone wants to improve mobile phone reception in cars and rail tunnels with Windpone Network Ericsson’s Windproof and conical multi-band antennas. As the first project, the company equipped the 1400 meter long Arlinger tunnel near Pforzheim with a stable 5G radio supply. Five bowling antennas are used for this. The plan provides for the expansion of 20 other tunnels.
Bowling antenna for 5G network expansion especially in long tunnels
Filling radio clad in tunnels Mark is according to HolezerThe major, especially challenging for network development in Vodafone, challenging. Because “passing cars and trains in tunnels is set in large air mass speed, which can vibrate on the antenna technique and thus obstruct the transmission and reception of mobile phone antenna”. The strength of the air used antennas and the requirements for their assembly are the same.

The cone -shaped structure of the manufactured -enntna makes them “especially windproof and therefore strong”. It supports all frequency range and ensures particularly high bandwidth in 5G networks. “For drivers and fellow passengers, the new generation of the new generation leads to a lower obstruction and more stable data rates,” Holezer said.
Vodafone plans to use bowling antenna in 20 other tunnels
Network operators say that Germany has over 270 street tunnels with a total length of 270 km on federal highways. There are 420 tunnels with a total length of more than 350 kilometers on land, district and city roads. In addition, the network of Deutsche Bahn contains 761 tunnels with a total length of more than 600 kilometers.
However, these bowling antennas are not required for every tunnel. For small tunnels, for example, antennas are sufficient on entrances and go out to be able to provide mobile phone receptions. With deep and long tunnels, optical repters are used, which forward the antenna made in the tunnel to the mobile phone signal and transfer the signal back to the mobile phone cell.
To create the infrastructure of the tunnel for the 5G network, cables should be drawn and base stations should be installed. Dutash sister and autoban GMBH tunnels are usually necessary for this construction work. Vodafone explains that most networks are expanded to mobile phone tunnels during renewal or maintenance work.
Due to the effort, each mobile phone network operator does not have to install its own cable and technology. Instead, network operators have divided tunnels among themselves and provide infrastructure to other providers.
According to a report in October 2024, the expansion of the 5G network in Germany is moving forward. At that time it was said that about two -thirds of the railway tunnel was already equipped with mobile phone technology. As far as the general 5G network expansion is concerned, Vodafone wants to get 95 percent of German homes by the end of the year, Deutch Telecom 99 percent. O2 Telefónica chases similar goals.
